banks 'n' browsers*
* compatibility
of bank websites with Linux web browsers
In late April 2002, a number of people on the mailing list of the Toronto Linux User Group started exchanging
information on the success they were having using the various web browsers
available for Linux, in using the online sites of their local banks. This
information has been expanded with the help of other participants, and is
presented below. Since this project began, information has been added, with
permission, from this page
on Australian banks as well as this one on Konqueror
compatibility.
Please send any additions,
updates or comments to G. Matthew Rice.
All new information, for banks in any country, is welcome. We're specifically
interested to hear from users of Konqueror, Mozilla, Netscape and Firefox who
find success with sites that did not work with older versions. And many thanks
to everyone who has contributed.
So, how well does your bank serve you?

A number of German-language sites provide additional details. This one summarizes
experiences from the newsgrpup de.etc.finanz. And another gives a chart that also gives information about
compatibility with other platforms.

Needs:
C - Cookies
F - Flash
J - Java
S - Javascript
Notes:
(1) Works sporadically;
sometimes gives a javascript error. May need to try to load page more than
once before it comes up without error - but works in the end.
(2) Is asking for cookies
to be made enabled even when they already are. Gives a security warning
about a script wanting to access your password.
(3) "Just got a rather
feckless little note back from HSBC saying that they can't support "less
widely used operating systems". This is despite the fact that their online
banking browser check page passes Netscape/Unix with flying colours. The
odd thing is, their site works fine on any 128-bit browser if you've previously
registered using Windows/IE."
(4) Version of browser was not specified
(5) Requires changing the browser identification to spoof IE on Windows
(6) TD does mention some explicit Linux support at this page.
(7) The site states that "at this
time Netscape 6.0 is not supported", though reports indicate that Netscape
6 works OK.
(8) Displays "connection to host HB4.homebank.net
is broken" but still works.
(9) Older releasess of the browser have been reported not to work,
ensure you have a current version for this site.
(10)Check balances only.
(11) Works fine but pops up a dialog
saying that it won't work and you have to log in twice.
(12) The site has explicit support for Linux
(13) The main Citibank page does a broswer check that only lets
through IE and Netscape 4. But if you go to www.citibankonline.com you can skip the
check and it works as listed.
(14) You may need to use the site
https://bcol.barclaycard.co.uk/ instead
of the bank's home page.
(15) You may need to bypass the site's browser checking page. This page
rejects "unsupported" browsers but the site actually works fine with the reported browsers.
(16) To access this site you must change the Javascript user agent;
this can be done by adding to "prefs.js" this line:
user_pref("general.useragent.override", "Mozilla/5.0 Galeon/1.2.0 (X11; Linux i686; U;)
Gecko/20020326 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows MUSTDIE)");
(17) More information about NatWest is located at
this page.
(18) You cannot use these browsers when going through the bank's main page,
but they work fine if accessing banking through the "Customer Service" area.
